Chapter 25

Avery

“So, she just started talking to you?” I rolled out another pie crust without waiting for Jude’s response. It had been late by the time I got back from dinner with my family the night before. Trent had kept us all laughing with the stories he told. He was good at that.

And I thought maybe good for my brother. I hoped it wouldn’t hurt too much when Trent went back to Tennessee. Maybe they could make the long distance thing work.

But, it meant I hadn't had much of a chance to talk to Jude before I crashed for the night.

“I saw her standing across the street and talked to her," Jude said. "Invited her back here.”

“What if she had been the one to kill him?”

Jude rolled their eyes at me. “She didn’t. Jake was her friend.”

“You didn’t know that. She still could have been lying.”

Jude let out a soft snort, but I didn’t look up as I cut the crust into smaller sections. “One of these days, you’ll have to learn to trust someone besides me, Hayden, or Alex.”

“Says who? That seems like plenty enough people. You didn’t include your dad and stepmom or my parents. That makes more than a half dozen.”

I didn’t see the point in adding anyone new into that. It looked like I might already have to add Trent. Wasn’t that enough?

Jude shook their head at me. I ignored that and folded the dough over to make little fruit pockets.

“Anyway,” Jude said, “Savannah told me Charisma and Lara are good friends. Apparently, Charisma comes by the fitness center when she’s having issues.”

“What kind of issues?” I wasn’t sure it really mattered, but I could tell Jude was bursting to tell me what they’d found out.

“With her work, I guess. Apparently writers don’t just get an idea and have it all flow out. My expectations are dashed.”

I might have a hard time detecting sarcasm, but Jude’s was sharp enough to taste. “The horror,” I said, just as dryly.

Jude bumped their shoulder against mine. I dusted powdered sugar over the top of the pockets and slid the pan into the oven before turning to Jude. “What does their friendship have to do with anything?”

“Maybe nothing,” Jude said. “Savannah did say the last time Charisma came in, she thought Jake might be cheating on her.”

“You think she would have killed him for that?”

“You’re the one so set on her being guilty. I’m sure people have killed for less. Savannah also made it seem like Jake’s former co-workers are spreading rumors. Maybe we should go talk to them.”

I looked from them back to the oven. “I have a lot of baking to do.”

“I didn’t mean right this instant,” they said. “I need to go open the front. I figured we could drive over there after we close.”

“Yeah, fine,” I said. “I need to get back to this, though.”

“We’re going to figure out what happened, Avery.”

I certainly hoped so. What other choice did we have?
